![]() A newspaper editor recently inquired about my education and experience in business management. I couldn’t help but smile at the prospect of having somehow squeezed business school into my already crammed résumé. Yet each day I’m learning something new about business. Quite often new techniques and ideas arise from thumbing through major publications, chatting with fellow merchants and paying attention to generous suggestions provided by clients and customers. However, I seem to learn more by observing the failures and mistakes of other businesses. I know that sounds unsympathetic but in an age when many are forced to reinvent the wheel I find it valuable to keep a close eye on what’s happening in the business community.
| What's So Special about Organic Coffee? | |
| Posted on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 9:58am | |
![]() In a day when everything seems like a gimmick, many coffee consumers are asking the question, “What’s so special about organic coffee?” From the green movement sweeping the world with environmentally conscious shoppers, to the endless options in recycled everything, what is it that makes organic coffee so fundamentally special? There are many types of organic coffees, some more organic than others but in short organic coffees are free of pesticides and chemicals commonly implemented in coffee production. The result is a cleaner, well balanced cup that simply tastes better. While there are several environmental and social benefits to producing organic coffee, the quality of taste will always win coffee lovers in the end.
| Listen to Your Customers | |
| Posted on Monday, March 22, 2010 at 10:47am | |
![]() It’s not always easy to listen to your customers but in today’s market we can’t afford to guess. A large majority of business owners often prefer to affirm their own ideas and agendas by “educating” their customers rather than take note of what others have to say. However, the key to any successful business endeavor has always been to pay attention to the opinions of those who utilize our products and services. Once you’ve mastered the art of listening the next step is learning how to properly filter what customers have to say. Reject the ill-informed ideas and unreasonable complaints and focus on constructive criticism that spurs business improvement and innovation.
| Free Coffee, a Thing of the Past | |
| Posted on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 3:58pm | |
![]() In addition to the numerous services and products provided by independent bookstores, many business owners offer free coffee to customers and visitors. A small coffee table positioned in the back of the shop allows patrons to help themselves to this simple extra touch. However, the free coffee scenario seldom produces much revenue and while it serves as a nice gesture, the amount of time spent cleaning, brewing and maintaining the complimentary beverage rarely justifies the unseen benefits. Numerous bookstores, who’ve wearied of offering free coffee, have discovered the advantage and profitability of providing gourmet coffee beverages to the plethora of customers willing to pay for quality service. Over the years, we’ve found that businesses who offer free coffee generally do so simply because they’re not quite certain what a full service coffee bar entails. Can I afford it? Will my county allow me to sell coffee? Is it really profitable for my size store? The answer to these questions and more is a resounding yes! And I’m not just saying this to sell coffee.
| Cool It with the Right Fridge | |
| Posted on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 4:59am | |
![]() Perhaps the most common forgotten factor when setting up an espresso business is the plethora of equipment and appliances absolutely necessary for a fully functioning coffee venture. While it’s important to select the right espresso machine for your establishment, it’s equally vital to make the right choice when selecting your refrigerator, blender and any other major appliance required for your menu options. When it comes to refrigerators and freezers, keep in mind that many state counties impose a host of rules and regulations concerning your choice in commercial appliances. Several states require two refrigerators on the premises. Others insist on stainless steel construction and regulate things like size, location and locking systems. It’s important to do your homework before making a final decision.
